A lot of factors go into an espresso tasting good: water quality, beans, grind level, tamper, and a recipe to tie everything together. Canaan IoT started with the goal of providing analytics based on real-time measurements to help baristas and coffee shops make great espresso, consistently.
As Co-founder and Head of Product:
- Led 0-to-1 hardware development for a suite of interconnected coffee-equipment devices, designing real-time sensing and feedback systems that optimized espresso quality and guided barista performance.
- Drove product to commercial launch and target cost through 12+ prototype generations that solved critical failures including heat/moisture-induced enclosure breakdowns and sensor drift.
- Sourced and qualified contract manufacturers and component suppliers across China, Europe, and the US, keeping prototype, test-hardware, and production builds moving through COVID-era shortages and lead-time volatility.
- Recruited, hired, and led a 10+ person engineering and design team across mechanical, electrical, and software workstreams.
Following my departure for studies abroad, the team continued to build on the product's early successes. They have since expanded the company's reach, and Canaan IoT is now deployed in over 60 coffee shops across 7 countries.
